The parent of a child with autism, Lynn Balter has spent the past 15 years as a devoted fundraiser and volunteer for children’s causes in the Phoenix area, such as the Center Against Sexual Assault (C.A.S.A.), Home-Based Youth Services (which aids homeless children), Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Autism Speaks (a/k/a Cure Autism Now), and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (S.A.R.R.C.).
Born and raised in Novi, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, Balter attended Western Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1982. After graduation, she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where she began her career as a licensed real estate agent and broker. She parlayed this experience into property management in both Tucson and Scottsdale, also owning several successful businesses along the way. The last of these was Scottsdale Resort Accommodations, a property management firm which she sold in 1998 to the publicly-owned company, Resort Quest International.
Soon after, she met Neil Balter, the founder of the highly successful closet organizing company, California Closets. The two married in 2000 and in 2002 welcomed their twins, Brianna and Jack, who was diagnosed with autism in 2005. It was Jack’s diagnosis that brought the plight of autistic children to the forefront of Balter’s philanthropic work.
